About Surface Lab

Every Surface, Perfected

Surface Lab Designs was born from a simple belief: the surfaces you stand on, work on, and depend on deserve better. We back that up with the right equipment. Advanced 3D scanning captures the exact geometry of your deck, and an American-built ShopSabre CNC router cuts every panel from premium EVA to that captured shape. That pairing is the backbone of our precision, and it is how we build surfaces that look incredible and hold up to real use on the water.

What Drives Us

Four principles that define every project we take on.

Precision First

Every cut is CNC-routed to tolerances under 0.25mm. We don't approximate. We engineer.

Material Science

We source only premium closed-cell EVA with UV-stabilized pigments rated for 2000+ hours of direct exposure.

Built to Last

Our surfaces are engineered for the harshest marine and outdoor environments: salt, sun, and everything in between.

Customer Driven

Every project starts with your vision. We listen, design, iterate, and deliver exactly what you need.

In the Shop

The Machines Behind the Fit

Two pieces of equipment turn your boat into an exact-fit kit. One captures your deck in three dimensions, the other cuts it. The scanner captures the shape, and the ShopSabre cut holds it to a tolerance under 0.25mm.

3D Scanning

We capture your deck, not a rough guess.

Before a single piece of foam is cut, we scan your deck digitally and map every curve, hatch, console, step pad, and cup holder into one precise model. That captures the complex, freeform contours hand-measuring tends to miss. Your scanned template drives the cutting head directly, so the kit follows your hull line for line.

  • Maps every curve, hatch, edge, and contour in 3D
  • Catches the freeform shapes manual measuring misses
  • Becomes the digital template that drives the cut
  • Kept on file, so reorders and replacements re-cut without re-templating your boat

ShopSabre CNC Router

American-built machine, American-made decking.

Your digital template feeds a ShopSabre CNC router, a machine engineered and built in Lakeville, Minnesota and purpose-fit for cutting EVA foam and marine decking. The foam is held flat on a vacuum table while the cutting head follows the toolpath, so edges come out clean and the fit comes out tight. American-built equipment producing American-made products, exactly as it should be.

  • ShopSabre CNC router built in the USA
  • Purpose-built for EVA foam and marine decking
  • Vacuum hold-down keeps every sheet flat and stable
  • Computer-controlled, so matched sets and re-orders come out identical

Capture to Cut

One workflow, edge to edge.

Scanning and cutting are two halves of the same process. We capture your deck, refine the design in CAD (seams, logos, patterns, and drainage laid out the way you approve them), then convert it straight to the toolpath that drives the router. It is the same scan-to-CAD-to-CNC pipeline high-end custom marine decking shops run, which means fewer trial fittings and less guesswork from the day we scan to the day your kit ships.

  • Scan, design in CAD, then cut from one digital file
  • Seams, logos, and patterns approved before anything is cut
  • Repeatable toolpath means consistent results every run
  • Fewer trial fittings than traditional cardboard or plastic templating
