Does EVA Foam Decking Get Hot? UV and Heat, Explained
A clear, engineering-backed look at whether EVA foam boat decking gets hot in the sun, how UV-stabilized closed-cell foam handles heat, and why it stays cooler underfoot than gelcoat, vinyl, or teak.
EVA foam decking does get warm in direct sun. It still stays meaningfully cooler underfoot than the surfaces it usually replaces: bare gelcoat, fiberglass, vinyl, and aluminum. Closed-cell EVA is a poor heat conductor, so even when its surface temperature climbs, it passes far less of that heat into your skin than a hard, reflective deck does. Color and thickness end up mattering more than the material itself. A light tan deck can read 20 to 40 degrees cooler than a black one sitting in the same sun. For most boaters, the right spec is the difference between a deck you can stand on barefoot at noon and one you simply can't.

Why EVA Foam Feels Cooler Than Hard Decking
Two separate things happen when you step onto a hot deck. One is how hot the surface is. The other is how fast that heat moves into your foot. People tend to blur the two together, but they're different.
Gelcoat, fiberglass, and aluminum are dense and conductive. They dump stored heat into your skin fast, which is why a sunbaked casting deck feels like a griddle even when its measured temperature isn't all that extreme. Closed-cell foam works the opposite way. It's roughly 90 percent trapped air held in a sealed-cell structure, which makes it a natural insulator. The surface can sit in the sun and still feel tolerable, because the foam resists handing that heat off at the point of contact.
The same logic explains why foam outperforms vinyl. Marine vinyl is thin and bonded straight to a hard substrate, so it tends to behave like whatever it's stuck to. EVA keeps an insulating air layer between your foot and the deck.
So How Hot Does EVA Foam Decking Actually Get?
Surface temperature comes down to sun angle, ambient heat, and above all, color. In the real world it breaks out like this:
- Light colors (tan, storm gray, light teak tones): These reflect more solar energy and stay closest to ambient. They're the coolest picks, and the ones we steer customers toward for full-sun cockpits and casting decks.
- Mid tones (medium gray, sand, brown): A practical middle ground. Warmer than the lights, but still comfortable for most barefoot use.
- Dark colors (black, charcoal, navy): Sharp-looking and great at hiding scuffs, but they soak up the most solar energy. In peak Gulf or desert sun, a black deck can turn uncomfortable barefoot by midday.
Here's a reliable rule of thumb. In identical conditions, a black surface can run 20 to 40 degrees hotter than a light tan one. Same foam, same build. The color is doing all the work. If barefoot comfort is your priority, that one decision outweighs everything else on the list.
How UV Stabilization Protects the Deck (and Why It Matters for Heat)
Heat and UV are tied together. Sustained sun does two things to lower-grade foam. It fades the color, and it breaks down the polymer, which brings on brittleness, chalking, and the kind of shrinkage that pulls corners loose.

Thickness, Texture, and Fit: The Other Heat Variables
Color is the headline, but a handful of build choices change how a deck performs in the heat:
- Thickness. More foam means more insulating air, which buffers heat better and cushions more underfoot. Standard marine decking lands around 5 to 6mm. We spec thickness to the application instead of defaulting to a single number.
- Texture. A textured top surface shrinks the solid contact area between your foot and the deck, which nudges the perceived temperature down on top of the traction it adds.

- vs. Marine vinyl: Vinyl tends to run hotter and harder with almost no cushioning. EVA's air-cell structure stays cooler and is easier on the joints over a long day.
- vs. Real teak: Teak is beautiful and stays reasonably cool, but it's heavy, expensive, high-maintenance, and slick when wet. Faux-teak foam gives you the look with better grip, no upkeep, and comparable barefoot comfort in light tones.
No surface is magic. But for a deck that's comfortable barefoot, safe when wet, and built to outlast the sun, correctly specified EVA is the strongest all-around answer.
How to Spec a Deck That Stays Cool
If barefoot comfort in full sun is the goal, prioritize in this order:
- 1.Pick a light or mid-tone color for anything you stand on barefoot. Save the dark shades for borders and inlays.

- 3.Match thickness to the application. More foam means more insulation and more cushion.
